Upgrading to a faster NBN plan does not always mean you need a new router. However, if your existing router is several years old, uses Wi-Fi 5 or earlier, or only has Gigabit Ethernet ports, it may limit the speeds available from newer NBN plans.
For NBN 500, 750 and 1000, a good Wi-Fi 6 router may be enough. NBN 2000 is different. To make proper use of a 2Gbps service, the router needs networking hardware capable of more than 1Gbps.
There is another catch: a faster router does not automatically mean faster Wi-Fi in every room. Walls, floors, distance and access-point placement can still become the bottleneck.

How Can You Tell If Your Current Router Is the Bottleneck?
A router upgrade becomes worth considering when:
- The router uses Wi-Fi 5 or an older standard
- Wired speed tests are much faster than wi-fi tests
- The router only has 1gbps ports, and you have NBN 2000
- Wi-fi speed falls sharply as you move away from the router
- Performance becomes poor when several devices are online
A particularly useful test for NBNis to compare a wired Ethernet test with a test taken beside the router. If Ethernet performs well but Wi-Fi does not, the NBN connection itself may not be the main problem.
Will Buying a New Router Fix Slow Wi-Fi?
Not necessarily.
One powerful router may work well in a smaller, open-plan property but struggle in a large or double-storey home. Brick walls, concrete floors, metal, mirrors and appliances can all reduce wireless signal strength.
It doesn’t matter if you have a fast NBN plan, weak Wi-Fi can remain a problem upstairs even after buying a newer router.
For more complex homes, the answer may be better network design rather than a more expensive router. Wired wireless access points can distribute Wi-Fi closer to the areas where it is actually used.

For NBN 500, 750 and many NBN 1000 households, Wi-Fi 6 can still be perfectly fine.
Wi-Fi 7 becomes more relevant for NBN 2000, newer multi-gig devices, and households planning their network for the next several years. It also introduces improvements designed to increase wireless capacity and efficiency.
So, do you need Wi-Fi 7 for NBN 1000? Usually, no. Wi-Fi 6 can support a gigabit-class connection under the right conditions. Wi-Fi 7 offers more headroom, but device capability, signal strength and placement still matter.
